Stone labyrinths near White and Barents Sea are unique archaeological heritage of Kola Peninsula, where tourists can see petroglyphic drawings, stands of ancient people. First petroglyphic drawings were discovered in 70-s years of the XX century by archeologists from Leningrad in place Chalmni-Varre on river Ponoy. In 1997 complex of petroglyphic drawings of the IV-II centuries A.C. were discovered on lake Kanozero in middle reach of river Umbi. It is not hard to get to Umba, an old seaside village, and it is the place, on Terskoy coast, where tourists can suffer a feeling of contact with eternity. Four thousand years ago ancestors of present Lapps made petroglyphs on stones, built stone “Babylons”, sending some sort of messages from the past to us and to those who come after us.
Varzuga – that is the only place in Europe where you can see a hunt of belugas - white whales. Foreign tourists watch this spectacle from a helicopter, and believe me, that is a real spectacle. 10 fishing camps for foreign and Russian tourists are situated on Terskoy coast. Season of salmon spawning is the longest here, from the beginning of June till the end of October.
Church of Dormition of Holy Virgin Theotokos in Varguza – is a pearl of Russian wooden architecture. It was built in 1674 by master Kliment and it is one of the most beautiful single-headed tepee churches on the north of Russia. Iconostasis of Dormitory church is unique, and it was blessed three years after it was built. There are four stages in it; ther are icons of outstanding old painting. In 1999 Dormitory church was handed over to Murmansk and Monchegorsk Eparchy.
Cathedral of the annunciation, in city Kole was built in the beginning of the XIX century and was used since 1992. There is an eight-end wooden prostration prayerful Cross, the most ancient wooden monument on Kola land, in its right aisle. Kola cross is a memorial monument to our ancestors, which had been reclaiming cruel northern seas for centuries. It was put up in 1635, probably, in honour of Varlaama Keretskogo, and, originally it stood near marine quay in Kola.
A monument to victims of foreign intervention of 1918-1920 deserves particular attention among historical revolutionary monuments. That is the first monument in Murmansk. Money for its building was gathered by citizens of Murmansk by subscription. It was mounted in 1927 in Murmansk according to the project of architect A.Savchenko. Constructivist by its style, designed as a captain's bridge-tribune, it expresses spirit of the revolutionary age.
A monument to originators of Slavic Script Kirill and Mefodiy of Bulgarian sculptor V.Ginovsky was mounted in Murmansk in 1990 (a copy of monument original, which is in Sophia). The monument is presented to Murmansk by state-public organization “13 centuries of Bulgaria” on behalf of Bulgarian nation in acknowledgement of reappearance of Slav Script Days.
Memorial complex “Valley of Glory” is situated on the 74th kilometer of highway Murmansk-Pechenga. Its base, which was created in 1950, is a statuary group – two soldiers with reclined flags. Every year in May, 9, it becomes a place of festivities in commemoration of soldiers who died defending Kola polar region. In 1974 memorial stones with names of 2 thousand soldiers are mounted here.
Dramatic theatre of decorated with the Order of the Red Banner Northern Fleet is the oldest theatre on Kola land. It is of the same age as the fleet itself and for about seventy years it shows art to fleet and civil audience. The theatre experienced hard times of Great Patriotic War together with the fleet, got acquainted numerous viewers in the most remote parts of the country with the life of fleet, it became a smithy of staff for many theatres of Russia. Modern theatre’s repertory is various.
It is the oldest museum of the region. It was founded in October, 17, 1926, and is located in the building which is a monument of city’s history. It has 17 expositional halls. In section “Nature” there is a single exposition of sea bottom in Russia – dry aquarium, a unique geological collection, derived from the depth from 100 m to 12 km during drilling of a super-deep well. Unusual monument in honour of “Ermak” – a father of Russian icebreaker fleet – was opened in 1985 near the building of Regional museum. A plinth with anchor of the legendary icebreaker is mounted against the background of maiolica panel – “Ermak is making a track in Arctic ices”.
Museum of Air Forces of Northern fleet was founded in 1976 and is the only one Naval Air Museum. For a quarter of a century the aviator’s museum became one of the mostly visited cultural and historical sites not only in Northern fleet but also in the whole Murmansk region. Museum complex includes: exposition on the history of aviation foundation and development on Northern fleet, house-museum of the first cosmonaut in the world Yuriy Gagarin who did military service in Air Force of Northern fleet from 1957 till 1961, airplane engineering and armament shed of the period of 1935-1990 years. Totally there are more than 10 000 exhibits. Some exhibits of this museum, which is situated in village Safonovo, are exclusive in the country and abroad.
